Tisei won't seek US Senate seat; Leone considering

The Salem News

---- — BOSTON (AP) — Former state Senate Republican leader Richard Tisei says he will not seek the U.S. Senate seat formerly held by Secretary of State John Kerry.

Tisei ran an unsuccessful campaign this past fall for the 6th Congressional District seat held by Salem Democrat John Tierney. He said Saturday the timing is not right for him to campaign in the June 25 special election.

Former Sen. Scott Brown also has said he will not seek the post. Other Republicans considering a race include former Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, state Rep. Daniel Winslow and ex-Navy Seal Gabriel Gomez.

Middlesex County District Attorney Gerard Leone, a Democrat, has reportedly said he may run for the post. Congressmen Edward Markey and Stephen Lynch are also seeking the party’s nomination.

Leone, a former federal prosecutor, handled the high-profile prosecution of attempted airline shoe bomber Richard Reid.
