Man held in domestic assaults, police scuffle

PEABODY — A Lynn man whose alleged assaults on his girlfriend put her in the hospital was ordered held without bail yesterday until a hearing Monday to determine whether he poses a danger if released.

Jeffrey Alexander, 29, of 29 Laurel St., Lynn, was arrested early yesterday, charged with assaulting his girlfriend, as well as her mother and a younger relative in an apartment on Central Street.

When police arrived, Alexander first barricaded himself in a second-floor bedroom, then went out a window and ran, until he was caught and tackled by police on Pulaski Street, said the prosecutor.

Prosecutor Lindsay Shaheen said Alexander had repeatedly abused his girlfriend over the prior several days, leaving her with injuries to her legs, head and back.

Alexander pleaded not guilty to three counts of domestic assault and battery, as well as charges of malicious destruction of property worth more than $250, resisting arrest and felony larceny during his arraignment yesterday in Peabody District Court.

Judge Richard Mori granted the prosecutor’s request to hold Alexander in custody until a further hearing.

Shaheen told the judge that police were called to the Central Street apartment early yesterday and encountered the victim, holding a small child, outside, calling for help.

As police approached, they saw Alexander run up a flight of stairs and into a bedroom on the second floor. They tried to enter, but Alexander was leaning on the door, they said. Moments later, he went out a window.

His girlfriend’s brother told police that he had instructed the younger children in the home to tell him if Alexander abused anyone. That apparently enraged Alexander, who punched the boy in the head, police said.

Their mother then tried to intervene and was grabbed by the throat, police said.

The girlfriend told police he then yelled at her, demanding that she get his clothing. As the family sought refuge in a bedroom, Alexander allegedly kicked in the door.
