Police: Purse worth $18K stolen from car

SALEM — Police say more than $21,000 worth of items — including an $18,000 purse — were stolen from a woman’s vehicle as she worked out at the Salem Fitness Center on Wednesday afternoon.

The woman told police that she had arrived at the gym at 11:45 a.m. and placed her keys on the member key rack, according to the incident log. By 1:45 p.m., the keys had disappeared.

It took the woman until 3:45 p.m. to get into her Mercedes with a spare key, at which point she discovered that the purse — an orange “Kelly” from Hermes — had been stolen from its trunk.

Also missing was an orange alligator wallet, a Prada make-up case with make-up, an iPhone 4 in a green case, along with five credit cards, a AAA card, her Massachusetts identification and, of course, the key to the vehicle itself.

The total value of the items stolen was reported to be $21,265.

Police determined that one of her credit cards had already been used at Target on Highland Avenue by 2:30 p.m. An officer followed up at the store but was unable to do anything without the woman’s credit card number.

The woman told police that she had reported the incident to the Salem Fitness Center, but that she “did not get a good response from them,” according to the log. Police advised her to contact the manager.

Police also advised the woman to contact the Registry of Motor Vehicles regarding her identification card and Mercedes about deactivating the car key.
