Settlement appears close on power plant

SALEM — A breakthrough appears close in settlement talks between Footprint Power, the developers of a natural gas power plant in Salem, and the Conservation Law Foundation, an environmental group contesting the new plant.

A joint motion released today said the two sides "may be able to reach a settlement" in the contentious case over construction of an $800 million power plant on the Salem waterfront.

Footprint and CLF have requested an extension of the time to comment on a tentative decision issued last week by the state Energy Facilities Siting Board, which approves power plant construction. The deadline was noon today. A final decision had been expected Thursday.

In their joint request to the state board, the two sides said they would submit a proposed settlement agreement no later than Feb. 18.
