Salem power plant gets final approval

The state's Energy Facilities Siting Board has granted final approvals for Footprint Power’s proposed natural gas power plant at the site of Salem Harbor Station.

The current coal- and oil-fired plant will shut down May 31. The new plant is expected to be built and operational by June 2016.

In its decision, the Siting Board accepted a settlement agreement between Footprint Power and the Conservation Law Foundation, which had sued to block the new plant. The settlement requires Footprint to reduce or offset its annual greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 80 percent by 2049.
