It's finally official: Salem State University

SALEM — This is U-Day.

This is the day Salem State College has long awaited, the day it officially becomes Salem State University.

Gov. Deval Patrick signed a bill in July making all state colleges part of the university system. The 90-day waiting period expires today.

Salem State is celebrating in style. Last night was "U-Nite" on the campus with a block party and a countdown carnival leading up to the historic name change at midnight.

Today, President Patricia Meservey, former President Nancy Harrington — who campaigned long and hard for this designation — and Senate Majority Leader Fred Berry will lead a lineup of dignitaries at a University Day ceremony at Marsh Hall on the Central Campus.

The excitement even spread to the university cafeterias, where they served a special dessert — U-cake.
