Good Friday walkers raise $27,000

1The walkers raised $27,000 for needy families on the North Shore, organizers said, continuing the tradition begun by the walk's late founder, Ray Battistelli.

"It was a very successful walk," said Good Friday Walk president Alan Battistelli, Ray's son. "About 40 percent were first-time walkers. A lot of the younger walkers weren't born when this walk started 33 years ago."

Organizers created a shorter and more scenic course this year, although it was still a very challenging 10.5 miles. Beverly resident Rich Donnelly took part in the walk for the 32nd time in 33 years, Battistelli said.

Since its inception, the Good Friday Walk has helped 1,600 families pay for rent, utilities and other needs. Donations can be sent to Good Friday Walk, P.O. Box 646, Beverly, MA 01915.
