Man arrested on 4th DUI charge

SALEM — A Beverly man was arrested on a charge of drunken driving, fourth offense, after an accident at North and School streets yesterday morning.

Police arrested Stephen Joseph Hyland, 61, of 20 James St., Beverly, on charges of drunken driving, fourth offense; leaving the scene after property damage; and a marked lanes violation.

An officer said Hyland was turning onto School Street from North Street in his blue pickup truck shortly before 11:40 a.m. when he clipped a car stopped in the opposite lane of traffic. The woman in the second vehicle was not injured.

After he left the scene of the accident, Hyland was arrested in the parking lot of King’s Roast Beef, 145 North St., police said.
