Police: Coyote chases man

---- — SALEM — Police say a man reported a confrontation with an aggressive coyote in the area of the power plant on Fort Avenue on Monday evening.

An officer responded to the 23-year-old’s Beach Avenue address at 8:34 p.m. The man told police he had been walking on Fort Avenue around 7:45 p.m. when a coyote ran out of the wooded area across the street from the power plant and began chasing him, according to the incident log.

The man told police that he ran toward a wall just after the power plant, jumped over it and stayed behind it for several minutes, but when he scanned the area again, the coyote was standing in the middle of the street “staring at him,” police wrote.

The man ducked back down, waited a couple of minutes and then made a break for it — running down Fort Avenue while the coyote continued to chase behind him.

The man said that the coyote “was making chomping sounds with its mouth” as it chased him, police wrote.

After about 30 feet, the coyote gave up and ran away, the man said.

Police were unable to locate the animal during a subsequent search of the area. An officer said there had been a coyote in the area of the power plant “for years.”

A report about the incident was left for the animal control officer.
