PEABODY — Police have arrested a Peabody man in connection with an armed robbery Sunday night at Town Variety. The crime brought a Danvers K-9 unit and the State Police Air Wing out for an extensive search that was unsuccessful.
Yesterday, police summonsed and later arrested Glenn E. Roderick, 41, of 18 Elm St., Apt. 2, Peabody, on a charge of armed robbery with a firearm.
The employee working in the store at the time, Jay Patel, said in an interview that he was not injured in the holdup, which occurred shortly before 9 p.m. at the convenience store at 116 Central St. in Wilson Square.
Roderick is scheduled to be arraigned in Peabody District Court today, according to Detective Michael Crane, the department’s spokesman.
Patel, 32, said the suspect came into the store around 8:42 p.m. and handed him a scratch ticket to cash. The ticket was not a winner, so the clerk handed it back.
“After, he just took out a gun,” Patel said. “He told me: ‘Give me the money,’ and I gave him the money.”
Patel said there was no scuffle, and he had never seen the suspect before.
Patel said the incident was “a little bit scary.”
Patrolman Justin Cecil obtained the warrant for Roderick’s arrest from Peabody District Court, Crane said.
At 1:49 p.m. yesterday, Detective Joseph Gilroy arrested Roderick in the vicinity of 117 Lowell St.
No further information was available as of press time last night, though Crane said police are actively investigating the incident.
Peabody police chased the suspect, and a Danvers police K-9 unit and the State Police Air Wing, using a thermal imaging device, joined the search. Police described the suspect as a white man in his 40s dressed in a dark, plaid, green jacket with a black winter hat and jeans. He reportedly showed a small black handgun. The state police helicopter monitored the area, while state and Peabody police went to the area of Castle Circle, according to the police log.
