Man admits posing as cop, demanding sex

LYNN — A Lynn man admitted yesterday to posing as a corrupt cop in an effort to force a young woman to have sex with him two years ago.

John Reis, 53, pleaded guilty to one count of impersonating a police officer during a hearing in Salem Superior Court and was sentenced to five years of probation, the result of a plea agreement accepted by Judge John Lu. As part of the deal, more serious charges of kidnapping, indecent assault and battery, and extortion were dropped by prosecutors.

Reis was arrested in October 2010, after a 22-year-old Lynn woman told police that a man in a pickup truck pulled up alongside her as she was walking on Union Street in Lynn around 10 p.m. and ordered her to get in.

Reis told her he was a police officer and that he would arrest her on a streetwalking charge unless she agreed to have sex with him, prosecutor Christina Pujals Ronan told the judge.

The woman asked for a badge, but Reis told her that if he had to show it, he would arrest her. He then told her they would have to go to her home to have sex.

When she told him that both her husband and mother-in-law were there, he demanded that she “get rid of them” and warned that he would be back in a half-hour, Ronan told the judge.

When he returned, the woman’s mother-in-law was outside, apparently with a pen and paper, and wrote down the plate number of the truck, which led police to his door.

Reis is “very remorseful and deeply embarrassed,” said his lawyer, John Valerio. “He has taken dramatic steps to address his issues.”

Ronan told the judge that the young woman died last summer before the case could go to trial.

As conditions of his probation, Reis will be required to take part in a mental health evaluation and treatment and maintain steady employment.
