Danvers woman airlifted after being struck by vehicle

DANVERS — A 32-year-old Danvers woman was flown by helicopter to a Boston hospital shortly after suffering serious injuries in a pedestrian accident at 7:30 a.m. yesterday, police said.

The area around Route 62 and Burley Avenue was closed to traffic for almost two hours while emergency crews tended to the victim and police investigated.

Police said officers responding to the accident found the woman lying in the road. The driver of the vehicle involved in the accident, identified by police as 44-year-old Gailute Urbonaite-Narkeviciene of 281 Maple St., Danvers, was at the scene and cooperated with investigators. She was later cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The Lexus SUV she was driving was heading east at the time of the accident.

Police were not releasing the name of the victim yesterday.

Danvers Fire Department and Lyons Ambulance crews arrived to treat the injured woman and transport her to Great Oak School, where a Boston MedFlight helicopter landed behind the school. The victim was flown to Massachusetts General Hospital, and her condition was unknown last night.

State police were called to help reconstruct the accident, and several troopers assisted with traffic control. The crash remains under investigation.
