Two charged in Ipswich boating crash

IPSWICH — Two men have been charged with driving drunk in connection with a July 8 boating accident that left a Salisbury police officer seriously injured, according to the Essex County district attorney’s office.

Salisbury Patrolman Michael Tullercash was a passenger in one of two boats that collided near Treadwell Island, not far from downtown Ipswich. As a result of the crash, three adults were ejected from their crafts. Another adult was injured after he jumped on one of the empty boats and secured it before it further injured those in the water.

Kelyn G. Harrell, 25, and Derek MacIntyre, 28, both of 10 Congress St., Ipswich, were charged with driving a boat while under the influence of alcohol and two counts of serious injury and negligence. Both were issued summonses by the Massachusetts Environmental Police and are scheduled to appear in Ipswich District Court in Newburyport on Dec. 13, according to Essex County District Attorney spokeswoman Carrie Kimball Monahan.

Monahan could not comment on the specifics of the incident or what prompted the charges. Moriarty also couldn’t comment on the case when reached by phone.

The area where the crash occurred is normally busy with boat traffic, Ipswich police Lt. Dan Moriarty said. The two boats that collided were similar-sized, center-console motor boats, roughly 20 feet in length, according to the Ipswich police official.

Those injured were transported to Beverly Hospital, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Tullercash, 30, has been with the Salisbury Police Department since last December and typically works the afternoon and evening shifts. Salisbury police Chief Thomas Fowler said Tullercash suffered facial injuries and was taken to Tufts Medical Center in Boston for further treatment following the accident.

Tullercash has since resumed his duties, according to police records.
