DANVERS — The notion of filling a police cruiser carries bad connotations anytime of the year, but the Fill a Cruiser for the Danvers Food Pantry fundraiser this weekend promises to do a lot of good this holiday season.
On Sunday, police plan to park not a cruiser, but the department’s Special Operations Truck, at the Stop & Shop at 301 Newbury St., in the Danvers Plaza Shopping Center, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The purpose of the police presence is to accept nonperishable food items for the Danvers People to People Food Pantry, 12 Sylvan St.
Police Chief Neil Ouellette said a representative of Stop & Shop came to the department and suggested the idea.
“It was a key opportunity to get them (the Danvers food pantry) some needed stock for the holidays,” Ouellette said. “How can you say no?”
“We are very low on juice and children’s snacks,” said Barbara Remon, the co-chairwoman of the food pantry.
Jars of peanut butter and jelly, cans and jars of nonperishable fruit, and packets and jars of applesauce are also in short supply, Remon said.
The Danvers Community Council’s recent Party With a Purpose helped stock the pantry’s shelves, but there is still a need. The pantry was started and is overseen by the Danvers Community Council.
“We are doing very well because the Danvers community came together,” Remon said.
