The finance board's Maddern aims to bring in more revenue

HAMILTON — After a year on the Finance and Advisory Committee, Scott Maddern decided to run for selectman.

He said one of his main goals is to bring more revenue into town and lower tax rates for residents.

“I think we need to lower our tax rate,” Maddern said. “If the tax rate is perceived to be higher than other towns, people won’t move here.”

Maddern, 57, who has lived in town for 25 years, said he will help grow revenue sources by supporting development and working to close the town landfill, which could be used by renewable energy companies to operate an anaerobic digester or solar farm.

In terms of development, Maddern said there is a need for more senior housing.

He said he would support the work of the Hamilton Development Corp., which aims to modify town policy to encourage non-single-family housing and commercial development.

He said that a top priority if elected will be strong communication between town boards, schools and residents in both Hamilton and Wenham.

“We have a shared library, recreation board and school district,” he said.

“We are always looking for ways to enhance our relationship with Wenham.”

Maddern said he’s been active in town as a volunteer, including the founding of the Arts and Activities Alliance, which raises money for after-school programs at the high school.

“I think I have a lot of proven experience working with different groups in both Hamilton and Wenham,” he said. “I’ve worked with youth, teenager, adult and senior programs.”
