DANVERS — A man trying to cross Route 114 west last night was struck by a Ford pickup and killed, police said.
The man, who was in his mid-40s, was unresponsive at 8:23 p.m. when Sgt. James Lovell came across the accident on Andover Street.
"(He) seemed to be seriously injured at the time," Lt. Carole Germano said. "CPR was initiated. He was pronounced (dead) at the Beverly ER."
Police had not released the identity of victim or the driver by press time last night.
According to witness Rich Plante, who works at the National Tire & Battery at 151 Andover St., the accident occurred almost directly in front of his shop.
"I heard a wicked loud smack noise, (then) the screeching of brakes," Plante said. "The body flew 20 or 25 yards."
He said the victim ended up in front of Kelly Infiniti at 155 Andover St. Police confirmed this address as the location of the investigation.
Plante said he was talking with one of his colleagues outside the business when the accident occurred. He said the driver of the Ford stopped immediately and was visibly upset when he spoke to police.
The impact of the crash severely bent the truck's front end, concaving the hood. After the accident, the victim's shoes lay in the road, not far from the truck.
Plante estimated that the truck's speed was in the "mid-30s." He said the police response to the accident was almost instantaneous.
Plante said one of the first things he did was take an inventory of his employees to see whether he knew the victim. He said he didn't.
"It's such a dangerous street to cross," Plante said.
Part of the road was shut down last night while police investigated the accident.
