The envelope, please.
An interesting range of movies has been nominated for Best Picture at the 84th Academy Awards tomorrow night. They include:
"The Artist," a silent, black-and-white film
"The Descendants," a low-key family tale starring George Clooney
"Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close," about a boy whose father died in the 9/11 attacks
"The Help," which depicts race relations in the South
"Hugo," a fantasy about a boy living in a Paris railroad station
"Midnight in Paris," Woody Allen's homage to the Lost Generation of writers and artists in the 1920s
"Moneyball," about the business of baseball
"The Tree of Life," a Cannes Film Festival favorite touching on the meaning of life
"War Horse," Steven Spielberg's old-fashioned drama about a boy and his horse
So what do local movie-goers think? We caught up with a some of them at Hollywood Hits in Danvers and asked them their picks for the Oscar.
"It's not a yes-or-no answer. 'The Artist,' because it's interesting that it would be popular in this day and age. Or 'The Help,' because it got the book right."
Joyce and Meyer Blumenthal, Winthrop
"'The Help.' A good story, with good characters."
Julia Mallon, Beverly
"Hugo." I thought it was cute.
Ruth Lindsay, with daughter Mary, Beverly
"The Help." And Meryl Streep for best actress in "Iron Lady."
Diane Spanoghe, Salem
"The Descendants." I loved it.
Sandy Zimmerman, Topsfield
