Chamber honors top businesses

SALEM — A local institution celebrating its 200th anniversary and a business that has been here just a short time were honored last night by the Chamber of Commerce.

The Salem Athenaeum, founded in 1810, and St. Jean's Credit Union, which recently moved its headquarters from Lynn to Highland Avenue, captured two of the top honors at the business organization's 88th annual Celebrate Salem Awards Dinner.

The historic library won the Long-Term Achievement Award, while the credit union was named New Business of the Year before a packed house of more than 260 at the Peabody Essex Museum.

Salem Cycles owner Dan Shuman was named Businessman of the Year. In addition to running his shop, Shuman launched the Witches Cup, a professional bicycle race around Salem Common that has become a summer attraction.

The Businesswoman of the Year honor went to Christine Sullivan, executive director of the Enterprise Center, a small business incubator at Salem State College. Under Sullivan, the center runs a number of popular programs, including the Million Dollar Women Symposium and an annual business plan competition.

Landry & Arcari, a Salem rug company that has become a Greater Boston landmark, won the Excellence in Retail Award. The Salem Farmers Market, started a year ago by Salem Main Streets, received the Community Service Award.

The winners were selected by a Chamber of Commerce committee.
