Science teacher to head Horace Mann

SALEM — Kevin Andrews will be the next principal of Horace Mann Laboratory School.

Andrews, a former science integration specialist at Bentley and Carlton schools in Salem, has been appointed to a one-year term by Superintendent William Cameron.

Andrews was among 22 applicants for the position, and he was selected from three finalists.

"We had an interview team," Cameron said, "and in discussing the candidates, all of whom had strong credentials for the position, I thought at this time he was the one who would best meet our needs."

Andrews will earn $86,353 to oversee the K-5 elementary school that has roughly 320 students.

Three other principal vacancies in the district were filled by April, but a search to replace Diane O'Donnell, who retired last month from Horace Mann, was delayed while officials considered whether to close the school to save money. Cameron announced in May that the school will remain open, but that a study committee will assess the district's facility needs.

The other three new principals all have three-year contracts; Andrews has a one-year contract that is subject to renewal, Cameron said.

"Necessary conditions of renewal of his contract will be not only his satisfactory performance as principal ..." Cameron said, "but also a determination by the School Committee that all seven elementary school facilities will remain in use subsequent to 2010-11."

Andrews is a familiar face in the Salem schools, where he worked from 2004 to 2009. He spent the last year as a science teacher and assistant principal at McCarthy School in Peabody.

Andrews, who lives in Beverly, has a master's degree in educational leadership from Salem State College and has previously worked as an educational specialist at the Harvard University Museum of Natural History. He has also taught middle school science in Manchester.

Horace Mann is on the Salem State College campus on Loring Avenue. It is one of four "lab" schools for the college, and Salem State owns the building and provides it free to the school district. The college pays for maintenance, repairs and utility costs, as well as half of the principal's salary.

Andrews will start work July 19.

The other new principals starting this summer:

Salstonstall School: Julie Carter, now a grade seven/eight teacher there, will take over as principal in August, earning $90,000. The K-8 school has 404 students and is also a teaching school for Salem State, which pays part of the principal's salary.

Bowditch School: Nora Pou, who was assistant director at a charter school in Pawtucket, R.I., will serve as principal at Nathaniel Bowditch School, earning $95,000. Bowditch is a K-8 school with 490 students.

Carlton School: Jean-Marie Kahn, a teacher from the Billerica schools, will earn $86,353 as principal of Carlton Elementary School, a K-5 school with 174 students.
