Garabedian seeks 7th term on City Council

---- — PEABODY — After more than two decades in elected office, Councilor-at-large Mike Garabedian, 57, ticks off a long list of projects that he says he was proud to help bring about.

As a member of the School Committee he voted for a measure that allowed the infrastructure for the Brooksby Village retirement community to be built. “We made Brooksby possible,” he says, noting this was virtually the first vote on the project.

He also worked for construction of the new Carroll School and the introduction of all-day kindergarten, he says. And he calls himself “the key mover in bringing the DARE program to Peabody.”

As a six-term city councilor, Garabedian has served as chairman of the public safety committee. He notes that Peabody is “a very safe place to live.”

In the future he aims to see the transformation of West Peabody’s weed-choked Crystal Lake into a recreation area.

“And I want to see the downtown built up so it’s not an area to drive through but a place where people want to stop and shop,” he says. Thus he’s voted for zoning changes and backed the downtown revitalization promoted by Mayor Ted Bettencourt. Garabedian hopes to form a commission to attract a quality restaurant and draw more people downtown.

This serves a dual purpose, he indicates, brightening the city and relieving the tax burden on Peabody residents.

“I don’t like to pay them,” he says of taxes. “They’re a necessary evil. ... It’s up to us as councilors and School Committee people to be responsible and remember that we all share in these costs.”

Finally, he says, “I want to thank the people of Peabody for putting me in office the last 22 years. I find it an honor to be re-elected.”
