Police: Mother asks officers to arrest her squabbling children

SALEM — A fight between brother and sister ended in a summons for one of them after their mother asked police to "Arrest them both — I can't take this anymore."

Officers were called to Lafayette Street at approximately 6:30 p.m. Monday, when a mother lamented that her five children were fighting all day. Her story, according to the log, raised concerns on the part of police because she admitted leaving the youngsters in the midst of these difficulties and going "out for a while to run a few errands," according to the police report.

When her decision to leave was questioned, police say she changed her story, stating, "They only started fighting while I was out."

Meanwhile, in her absence, her oldest son, 15, engaged in a physical altercation with his 8-year-old sister, punching her in the arm, according to the report. That brought an intervention from the 16-year-old daughter, trying to protect her sister.

In his statement, the son told police "this is when he 'pushed her' just to keep her from hurting him."

The 16-year-old told police she'd been pushed to the ground.

Asked "what she felt we as a Police Department could do to assist her with the issues she's having as a parent," the mother replied, "I want them both out of here," according to the report. She then asked to have the brother and sister arrested.

The son will be summonsed to court instead for hitting the 8-year-old. Meanwhile, police have notified the state Department of Children and Families of the situation in the home.

None of the children's fathers seemed to be involved, according to police.
