Police: Man grabs woman's cash outside Salem store

SALEM — Police say a woman was counting her money outside a store on Salem Street on Tuesday night when she was robbed by a man who came up behind her and grabbed it.

A 10:12 p.m. report of the incident brought officers to 116 Lafayette St., where the woman told them she had been robbed outside a food store at 20 Salem St. about fifteen minutes earlier, according to the log.

“She was counting her money after she had just purchased a pack of cigarettes,” wrote police. “A black male came from behind her and grabbed the money out of her hand.”

The woman said she lost $80.

After he took the money, the man reportedly ran toward Harbor Street. He was described as having dreadlocks and being in his early 20s, about 5-foot-8 and 125 pounds. The man was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt with a symbol on it at the time.

Multiple officers searched the area but were unable to locate the man.

There were no other witnesses to the incident.

No injuries were reported.
