Salem Willows pier repairs to start

By Bethany Bray

---- — SALEM — Repair work on the Salem Willows pier is expected to start this week.

The pier, a popular fishing spot and Willows attraction, was closed to the public this spring after it was damaged by winter storms.

The city put the repair work out to bid, and a contract for $53,000 was awarded this month to North Shore Marine.

Work is expected to start this week and continue for three weeks, said Karen Partanen, director of park, recreation and community services.

The work will start closest to land and continue seaward so that portions of the pier can open as the work progresses, she said.

The city is working with its insurance company in hopes that some of the repair costs can be covered by insurance.

The waterfront Salem Willows park, off Fort Avenue, is city-owned property. The pier has been damaged by storms and rough seas and repaired a number of times throughout the years.
