Marblehead man seriously hurt in crash

MARBLEHEAD — A Marblehead man was listed in critical condition last night at a Boston hospital after a serious one-car crash on Humphrey Street.

Cameron J. Sylvester, 20, of 49 Village St., was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital following the 2:23 a.m. accident.

Sylvester was riding in a gray 1999 Honda SUV with two other men when it struck a tree near the intersection of Tedesco Street, according to police.

When police arrived at the scene, they found two of the occupants of the vehicle “semi-conscious” and one man “unresponsive,” according to the Marblehead police log.

“There were some serious injuries,” said Detective Sgt. Sean Sweeney.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to extricate the accident victims from the car, according to the log.

The two other occupants, Maxwell Hill, 21, of 30 Elizabeth St., Lynn, and Michael Willie Johnson, 19, of Mattapan, were treated and released from MGH.

Sylvester was undergoing surgery yesterday afternoon, according to All Marblehead, a Facebook page.

Although initial reports said the driver of the car may have fled on foot, and that a K-9 unit was called in to search for an individual who was 6 feet tall with red hair, Marblehead police said late yesterday that they did not know who was driving or if a fourth person was in the car.

“We’re still investigating who was operating the vehicle,” Sweeney said. “We have not identified a fourth person.”

Police are also trying to determine the cause of the accident.

“We will have a State Police (accident reconstruction) team assisting us,” Sweeney said.

The Honda, which was totaled, was owned by William Pappas of 15 William Road, Marblehead, according to the police report.

“The owner of the vehicle called and stated that someone took his vehicle without his permission,” the police log stated. “He stated that he was at a friend’s house with people and someone took his keys off the counter and took the car. He stated that he doesn’t know who took it.”
