Driver held in crash that killed student

WAREHAM (AP) — A Middleborough woman was drunk and on heroin when her pickup truck hit another car in Lakeville over the weekend, killing a Gordon College freshman, prosecutors say.

The driver was ordered held yesterday on $100,000 bail.

Kathleen Allen, 23, pleaded not guilty at her arraignment in Wareham District Court on charges of motor vehicle homicide while driving under the influence of liquor with negligence, driving under the influence of liquor with serious injury and negligence, driving under the influence of liquor, driving to endanger, and a marked lanes violation.

The crash on Route 44 in Lakeville around 2 a.m. Saturday took the life of Monica DeMello, 18, of Middleborough, a psychology major at Gordon College in Wenham who was home visiting her family for Easter.

The impact of the crash flipped both vehicles on their roofs.

A passenger in Allen’s pickup truck was also hurt and flown to a Boston hospital. Her name was not made public.

A test at the scene showed that Allen’s blood alcohol level was 0.14, prosecutors said. The legal limit in Massachusetts is 0.08.

“The family is absolutely devastated,” said Ryan Benharris, a spokesman for DeMello’s family. “They loved her very much. This is a young woman who never did anything wrong in her entire life. She never drank, never smoked cigarettes — was a highly religious woman.”
