Races start to take shape in Salem

Incumbent Councilors Robert McCarthy (Ward 1), Todd Siegel (Ward 3), Josh Turiel (Ward 5) and Joseph O’Keefe (Ward 7) are the only candidates so far in their respective wards.

Councilors Kevin Carr, Paul Prevey and Arthur Sargent have yet to pull papers or announce publicly whether they intend to run.

Candidates have through July 30 to take out nomination papers, collect signatures and return the paperwork to the city clerk’s office. The election is Nov. 5.

Driscoll was elected as Salem’s first female mayor in 2006 and re-elected in 2009 to a term that lasts through 2013. If re-elected in November, Driscoll would begin a third four-year term in January 2014.

Sawicki, who runs for office frequently, has taken out papers to run for several offices in addition to mayor.
