Driver is charged in crash that injured Marblehead man

MARBLEHEAD — Police yesterday brought charges against the man who was allegedly driving a Honda SUV that struck a tree near the intersection of Humphrey and Tedesco streets early Friday morning in a crash that severely injured a Marblehead man.

Passenger Cameron J. “Cam” Sylvester, 20, of Marblehead was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was still listed in critical condition last night.

Marblehead police Chief Picariello identified the driver as Michael Willie Johnson, 19, of 371 River St., Mattapan. The chief said Johnson is being summonsed to court on charges of three counts of drunken driving causing serious bodily injury and single counts each of negligent operation of a motor vehicle, being a minor in possession of alcohol, and driving with a suspended license.

“More individuals may be charged at the completion of the investigation,” said Picariello, who declined to give any more information about the case.

Reports from the log indicated that the driver fled on foot. Initial reports also stated that the owner of the vehicle called police and told them that his Honda had been taken from a friend’s house without his permission.

The department filed the charges against Johnson in court, and the clerk found probable cause, Picariello said. Johnson’s arraignment in Lynn District Court could be at least 10 days away.

Johnson and another occupant, Maxwell Hill, 21, of Lynn, were treated and released from MGH.

According to the All Marblehead Facebook page, a fund has been set up to help Sylvester’s family with medical expenses. Checks should be made payable to the Cameron Sylvester Fund and sent to National Grand Bank, 91 Pleasant St., Marblehead, MA 01945.
