Police: Self-inflicted stab wound leads to arrest

BEVERLY — Police say a Beverly man who apparently stabbed himself in the chest Thursday evening during a domestic argument claimed to have done it to avoid hurting anyone else.

Jose Sanchez, 40, of 202 Rantoul St., was arrested on charges of domestic assault and battery, threats to commit a crime and destruction of property.

Police were called to the apartment to respond to an altercation, and discovered Sanchez with what they said was a very minor injury.

At press time, Sanchez was at the hospital, “getting stitched up,” according to police.

Police said Sanchez told them he got so frustrated during an argument with a woman that he stabbed himself to avoid inflicting the injury on her. It is unclear what the dispute was regarding.

Police had been called to their apartment twice earlier Thursday, once at 1:30 a.m., when reports had come in of a woman yelling out the window that her boyfriend had a knife.

When officers arrived on the scene, the woman said she had been asleep for over an hour.

According to the second report, Sanchez was having a verbal argument with his neighbor at 8:42 a.m. Police advised the two to avoid each other, to which they agreed.
