Salem Academy graduates 34

SALEM — The 34 students in Salem Academy Charter School’s Class of 2014 graduated at a ceremony in the ballroom of Salem Waterfront Hotel on Friday evening.

“The Class of 2014 is remarkable in the way that they’re independent thinkers and challenge norms and expectations in a very positive way,” said college counselor Melissa Lassen before the ceremony. “We are very, very proud of them.”

The ceremony included speeches from Anna Novicheva, valedictorian; Sean O’Neil, the school’s executive director; Mildred Aroko, a 2010 graduate; Jackson Stevens, a graduating senior; and Amy Martyn, English Language Learner teacher.

Five graduates were awarded scholarship prizes during the ceremony: Salvador Martinez, Dominick Serino, Timothy Smith-Mackey, Hannah Fortin and Nadia Tabarra.

During a portion of the ceremony right before the presentation of diplomas, each student in the graduating class read aloud a favorite quote as his or her “legacy” to the school.
