Marblehead man charged with creating, posting child porn

MARBLEHEAD — A Marblehead man identified as a collector of child pornography during a Homeland Security investigation last year was indicted this week on charges that he raped a 6-year-old girl and then posted images of the abuse online.

Raymond DePaula, 39, of 23 Puritan Road, Marblehead, is facing 57 counts that include aggravated and forcible child rape, posing a child in a state of nudity or sexual conduct, possession of child pornography and improper storage of firearms in the indictments, handed up Thursday afternoon by an Essex County grand jury.

DePaula is being held without bail and is expected to be arraigned on the new indictments in Salem Superior Court on July 29, said Steve O’Connell, a spokesman for District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett.

DePaula was charged in August of last year with possessing child pornography and improper storage of a gun collection that included handguns, rifles and shotguns. Shortly after his indictment in that case, he was released on $20,000 bail, which was posted by a family member.

But just over a week later, investigators discovered new images online that showed DePaula engaging in sexual acts with a young girl, police said last month.

DePaula allegedly admitted that the images were of him and a 6-year-old girl, and that they had been taken several years ago. But he claimed that someone must have stolen the memory card from his camera to post the images online, then returned the card to his camera.

Investigators determined that the images were from incidents that had occurred in January 2010, according to the indictments.

Marblehead Police arrested DePaula again, charging him with child rape and possessing child pornography. A Lynn District Court judge last month set bail at $500,000 on the new charge and revoked his bail in the earlier case for 60 days.

More details could emerge during DePaula’s arraignment later this month.
