Salem Cultural Council allots $11,000

SALEM — From a school trip to hear the Boston Symphony Orchestra to a mural project, the Salem Cultural Council is injecting more than $11,000 into the Witch City arts scene.

The seven-member council announced last week that it will distribute 18 grants totaling $11,050 to Salem schools, artists and organizations this winter.

Grants range from $250 to $1,500. Among the award recipients are the Salem Arts Festival; a concert series and youth orchestra of the Salem Philharmonic; numerous school field trips; and artists' projects involving film, poetry, music and theater.

Grants were awarded from a pool of money given to Salem from the state-funded Massachusetts Cultural Council. The Salem Cultural Council is composed of Gerald Ryan, Sara Ashodian, Derek Barr, Karen Gahagan, Nicholas Giarratani, Gary LaParl and Christine Michelini.

The council will accept grant applications from local groups again in the fall; paperwork is due by Oct. 15. Details are posted at www.salemculturalcouncil.org.
