Santarpio's and Burtons plan to open in summer

PEABODY — Pizza lovers may have to wait until July to enjoy a slice from Santarpio's new Peabody location.

Santarpio's is a famous, family-run East Boston pizzeria that is transforming the former Bennigan's restaurant on Route 1 north into its 300-seat North Shore home. The Peabody venture will be the pizzeria's second location, after 107 years in business.

At a March hearing where the restaurant secured its entertainment license from the City Council, Santarpio's said it expected to open in June. But the date has been pushed back to July, manager Carla Santarpio said.

Bennigan's closed after the national restaurant chain filed for bankruptcy. A court gave Santarpio's approval to buy the Route 1 location, 71 Newbury St., for $1.7 million.

Santarpio said the business took control of the property two months later than anticipated. The ovens that will cook what GQ magazine selected as one of America's 25 Best Pizzas have been ordered and need to be installed, Santarpio said.

Meanwhile, Burtons Grill is looking to open on June 22 at the Northshore Mall, according to corporate office manager Emma Schulz. The upscale contemporary American eatery is moving into the mall's Nordstrom wing. It will be the restaurant's sixth location.

Burtons is scheduled to come before the council tonight for hearings on its entertainment license and a special permit to operate as a restaurant that sells alcoholic beverages. The restaurant will have seating for 240.
