Police: Salem man faces third drunken driving charge

SALEM — Police say a local man was arrested on his third charge of drunken driving and his sixth charge of operating after license revocation after an officer saw him speeding in the area of Union Street early yesterday morning.

Michael P. Conway, 38, of 24 Putnam St., Salem, was arrested on charges of drunken driving, third offense; operating after license suspension, sixth offense; and speeding greater than reasonable.

According to the incident log, an officer on Union Street observed a gray Toyota operating “at a high rate of speed” about 1:30 a.m. But the vehicle turned onto Derby Street and the officer was unable to locate it.

Another officer soon found the vehicle and its operator behind Brothers Deli at 283 Derby St.

Conway “showed clear signs of intoxication” before he was arrested, according to the log. An officer said he refused field sobriety tests and the Breathalyzer.
