Police: Man arrested after attempting to steal scrap metal

SALEM — Police say a man was arrested yesterday afternoon after he tried to steal scrap metal from an Osgood Street property and was confronted by its owner.

Michael J. McCausland, 34, of 56 Margin St., Salem, was arrested on charges of receiving stolen property over $250, attempting to commit a crime and trespassing.

An officer responded to 4 Osgood St. after a 1:15 p.m. report of the incident. A man at the address said he had been in his garage when he observed another man enter his property and attempt to take scrap metal from the rear of the garage, according to the incident log.

Police wrote that the man confronted the suspect and was able to get back his scraps of copper pipe and a 5-gallon bucket. The suspect then left the area in a taxi.

The incident was caught on video, through which the officer was able to identify McCausland as the suspect, due to “past dealings” with him, according to the log.

The property was “posted with no trespassing signs in conspicuous locations due to an ongoing problem with thefts from the property of metal that he accumulates in his work as a plumber,” police wrote.

The officer then went to North Shore Recycled Fibers on Jefferson Avenue and found McCausland waiting to “cash in a large quantity of metals and wire that he had just arrived with” in the taxi.

McCausland admitted to being at the Osgood Street address and said he had given the man’s property back when approached, according to the log.

He was then arrested.
