Spa workers deny prostitution charges

DANVERS — Two women arrested last month on prostitution charges after police raided a Route 1 massage parlor pleaded not guilty during their arraignments yesterday.

Qinfei Chan, 48, of Malden and Xiaoping Wan, 48, of Charlestown are facing charges of sexual conduct for a fee and deriving support from prostitution, following the raid at a business known as Newbury Bodywork and also as Asian Wellness.

Police had been looking into the business off and on since 2007, after receiving information that customers were paying extra for workers to engage in sexual acts. Last month, after new complaints about the business, police sent an undercover officer to an appointment.

Lawyer Ed O'Reilly, who represents both women, asked Salem District Court Judge Dunbar Livingston to order police to return Wan's cellphone, credit cards and a device that helps her translate Chinese into English.

Livingston declined to issue that order yesterday, suggesting that O'Reilly speak directly to Danvers police.

The two are due back in court on Feb. 14.
