Boxford woman scratches Monopoly ticket for $1M

DANVERS — By playing a lottery scratch ticket featuring Monopoly's Mr. Moneybags at a local convenience store, a Boxford woman has won a bunch of money.

On Feb. 2, Ann McBrierty claimed the $1 million prize, according to the Massachusetts State Lottery's website, which features a picture of her holding an oversized Mega Monopoly scratch ticket and a check.

McBrierty declined comment when reached. The lottery said she selected to receive a one-time lump sum payment of $650,000 after taxes.

The Country Farm convenience store at 79 Maple St. in Danvers Square sold her the winning $10 scratch ticket, meaning the store will get a windfall in the form of a $10,000 commission.

"That's good, man, for someone to win out of my store," said owner Brijesh Patel, 34, of Peabody. The ticket was sold on Feb. 1. Patel has owned the store for three or four years, and he said this is the first time there has been a $1 million winning ticket sold from there. Last year, the store sold a $50,000 winner.

"It's a lucky store, you know," Patel said. "People won $1 million down there."

Patel has owned the newsstand at the Northshore Mall for the past six years, and he has had a $1 million winner from there, as well.
