Teller blocks attempt to cash stolen checks

SALEM — Barely 10 minutes after a bank customer called a teller to report that her checks had been stolen, a man walked in with the stolen items and attempted to cash them, police said.

At the Salem Five Savings Bank, a teller ducked out for a minute after being asked to cash a $500 check, seemingly authored by the victim, to call police. The suspect was able to flee the bank before police arrived; however, police believe they know the offender's identity and have issued a summons for his arrest on charges of uttering a false check, forgery, receiving stolen property and attempting to commit a crime.

The incident occurred at 9:06 a.m. yesterday on Essex Street. The victim told the teller that her checking account had been compromised and "checks had been stolen from her home," according to police reports.
