Marblehead man held on $100K bail in child porn, rape case

MARBLEHEAD — A Marblehead man indicted earlier this month on charges that he raped a 6-year-old girl and documented the abuse, which was later found online, will remain held on $100,000 cash bail, a Salem Superior Court judge ordered yesterday.

Raymond DePaula, 39, of 23 Puritan Road, pleaded not guilty to 57 new counts that were handed up in indictments earlier this month, including charges of forcible child rape, posing a child in a state of nudity, possessing child pornography and improper storage of firearms.

He was already under indictment on child pornography charges first filed last year. The bail in that case remains $20,000.

That bail had been posted in late May. About a week later, investigators learned of new images being posted online that showed DePaula engaging in sexual acts with the girl, and that bail was revoked.

Confronted by police, DePaula initially claimed that someone must have stolen the memory card from his camera, uploaded images to the Internet and then returned the card to his camera.

The images dated back to 2010, when DePaula had contact with the child.

DePaula has not, at this point, been formally charged with posting the images online.

Prosecutor Kate MacDougall offered no new details in the case during yesterday’s hearing, where DePaula’s attorney waived the formal reading of the charges and agreed that his client will remain held on $100,000 bail.

MacDougall did ask Judge John Lu to remind DePaula of a no-contact order that has been issued, saying DePaula sent a letter to a witness in the case.

“Mr. DePaula seems to not quite get it,” MacDougall told the judge, who went on to add that no-contact order to the terms of DePaula’s new case.

A status hearing is scheduled for Aug. 16.
