New location for bus drop-off, pickup at Salem T station

By Bethany Bray

---- — SALEM — Starting tomorrow, MBTA buses will be dropping off and picking up passengers at a different spot at the city’s commuter rail station.

The bus drop-off has been rerouted as part of the project to build a new, $27-million parking garage and commuter rail station in Salem. The parking lot was closed to cars one week ago; construction is expected to last 14 months.

Buses will start following a U-shaped drop-off route at the front of the station tomorrow, said Beth Debski, Building Salem coordinator.

The new route will drop bus passengers off a little farther away from the train platform, requiring passengers to walk a little more than they do now.

The MBTA has repaved the sidewalk that runs along the North River, which will be used by bus and train passengers.

The station’s Washington Street staircase will remain open until just before Labor Day, Debski said.
