Change at center of coffee shop dispute

SALEM — The concept of change was grounds for a bitter dispute at Jaho Coffee & Tea on Saturday afternoon.

A customer demanded change for a $20 bill after his purchase. The clerk declined, insisting he had paid with a $10 bill.

The argument grew so heated that police were called, including officers Kathleen Rocheville and Victor Ruiz. They suggested, "Let's go to the videotape."

Close observation of the video revealed a surprise.

"They were both wrong," according to the log. The customer had given the clerk only $5.

The customer "was sent on his way and advised that Jaho Coffee doesn't want his patronage anymore. He stated he'll go back to Starbucks."
