MARBLEHEAD — A 39-year-old Marblehead man was arrested in an ongoing child pornography case last week after police say he posted pictures of himself performing sexual acts with a girl believed to be 6 years old when they were taken a few years ago.
Raymond DePaula, 39, 23 Puritan Road, was arrested at his home at 4:28 p.m. Thursday on charges of aggravated rape of a child under 16, indecent assault and battery on a child under 14, disseminating child pornography and posing a child for sexual photographs.
Marblehead police were assisted by two agents from Homeland Security during the arrest.
DePaula was arraigned Friday at Lynn District Court, but the details were not available yesterday by either Marblehead police or the district attorney’s office.
Chief Robert Picariello would not comment further on the case yesterday.
Police applied for a search warrant of DePaula’s home after hearing from a special agent from the Department of Homeland Security regarding an open child pornography case. Special Agent Greg Squire reported that “new images were posted on June 6, 2013,” according to a police report.
DePaula was initially arrested on a warrant for the charge of indecent assault and battery on a child under 14. He was read his Miranda rights after being placed into custody but, police say, he agreed to speak with them.
“I showed DePaula three photographs with images of him and (the victim),” wrote Sgt. Sean Brady in his report. “DePaula admitted to me that the photos were of him and (the victim).”
There are about 17 images showing the child nude and in sexually suggestive poses, according to the police report.
“DePaula admitted that this had occurred a few years ago,” Brady wrote. “He thought that (the victim) was 6 years of age at the time.”
DePaula denied posting the pictures to the Internet, according to the report.
