Honorary mayor's race gains momentum

DANVERS — New Brothers Restaurant and Deli co-owner Kary Andrinopoulos’ hopes of being re-elected honorary mayor of Danvers could be dashed this year.

He’s facing a strong challenge from another person who deals with food and entertainment in town: Danversport Yacht Club restaurant manager Larry DeLorenzo.

The two men are locked in a four-way race in the popular Danvers Rotary Club fundraiser to elect a new honorary mayor of Danvers. As of yesterday afternoon, DeLorenzo had 256 votes to incumbent Andrinopoulos’ 166.

Gayla Bartlett, manager of Cranney Self Storage and president of North Shore Women in Business, stood in third place, and Kelly Delaney, the owner of Cakes for Occasions, was in fourth.

The election for honorary mayor is one of the few where the phrase “vote early and often” makes sense — each vote represents a $5 donation to Danvers Rotary and its scholarships. Unlike official town elections, you don’t have to be a resident of Danvers to vote.

As of yesterday afternoon, with eight days to go, the fundraiser had raised more than $2,500 for college scholarships for Danvers high school students. There is still plenty of time left to vote. Last go-around, the campaigns raised $16,000 for scholarships, and some are hoping to top that total.

The winner will be announced at the Rotary-sponsored band concert at the Rotary Pavilion, 15 Sylvan St., the Danvers library, on Thursday, June 27, at 6 p.m., an event that is part of Danvers Family Festival.

While Danvers has a town manager and Board of Selectmen to administer town affairs, the honorary mayor’s job will be to appear at various Rotary functions.

DeLorenzo, according to his candidate’s page, is running as “the party’s on” candidate, given the number of events the Danversport Yacht Club hosts. “Win or lose, the party’s on,” his page states.
