---- — SALEM — Sailors from the USS Constitution were seen hoisting sails and climbing the rigging of the Friendship yesterday.
This month marks the fourth year U.S. Navy personnel from “Old Ironsides” in Charlestown have come to train on Salem’s Friendship.
The three-masted ship is good for training because she’s smaller and “more of a controlled environment” than the Constitution, said Jonathan Parker, public information officer for the National Park Service.
“Given the Constitution’s affiliation with Marblehead and the North Shore, it’s a great thing,” he said.
Friendship, the icon of Salem’s Derby Wharf, is a replica of a 1797 East Indiaman merchant vessel.
