Primary election likely for Peabody state rep

Peabody Democrats Beverley Griffin Dunne and Jim Moutsoulas are headed for a primary election this fall to challenge Republican Rep. Republican Leah Cole.

Both Dunne, a longtime School Committee member, and Moutsoulas, a city councilor, filed nomination papers by yesterday’s deadline. Both ran two years ago as well, though Moutsoulas withdrew before the primary due to a technicality.

Dunne lost to Cole in the general election by 73 votes, in a three-way race that also included unenrolled candidate David Gravel. Cole has also filed her nomination papers.

Once those papers are certified locally, they must be submitted to the Elections Division of the Secretary of State’s office by May 27. The state primary will be held Sept. 9.

Longtime Rep. Ted Speliotis, D-Danvers, will face another challenge for the 13th Essex District, this time by local businessman Tom Lyons, R-Peabody. The district includes Danvers, West Peabody and part of Middleton.

In Beverly, incumbent Jerry Parisella, D-Beverly, will be challenged by Libertarian candidate Euplio Marciano. Marciano has run multiple times for mayor and city councilor, unsuccessfully.

Reps. Lori Ehrlich, D-Marblehead, and Brad Hill, R-Ipswich, are both running unopposed for re-election, as are Sens. Joan Lovely, D-Salem, Bruce Tarr, R-Gloucester, and Tom McGee, D-Lynn.
