---- — A comedy night fundraiser to benefit disabled veterans is set for Saturday, May 17, at Giggles Comedy Club. Doors open at 7 p.m., followed by the 8:30 p.m. show, which features comedians Tony V, Steve Bjork and Johnny Pizzi. Tickets cost $25 and include pizza and nonalcoholic drinks. Gerry Giggles Comedy Night, featuring comedians Mike Prior, Paul Keenan and Patty Ross, will take place Saturday, May 17, at the Gerry 5 VFA Function Hall, 210 Beacon St., Marblehead. Doors open at 5:30 p.m., followed by the show at 7. Tickets for only the show cost $15 in advance and $20 at the door. For dinner and the show, tickets cost $25 in advance and must be purchased by Wednesday, May 14. Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. A cash bar will be available. Attendees may bring snacks. Salem residents who know of a pothole on a public roadway should help the city by reporting it directly to Department of Public Services by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org or calling 978-744-3302. Include the exact address or a location description, along with a contact name and telephone number if possible. Feel free to send photos, as well. Reporting a pothole does not guarantee it will be immediately repaired that day; it will be added to the list for DPS crews to fix. DPS prioritizes potholes based on their severity and attempts to work in geographic clusters to maximize efficiency of resources.
Emotions Anonymous, a 12-step organization similar to Alcoholics Anonymous, will meet weekly for the purpose of working toward recovery from emotional difficulties. Members are from many walks of life and are of diverse ages, economic statuses, and social and educational backgrounds. The only requirement for membership is a desire to become well emotionally. Food Addicts in Recovery Anonymous is a free, 12-step recovery program for anyone suffering from food obsession, overeating, undereating or bulimia. The Salem YMCA is launching an Ames Hall Concert Series, all proceeds from which will benefit the Salem YMCA’s new music studio and programming. The first concert, on Saturday, May 17, at 7 p.m. at Ames Hall, 1 Sewall St. in Salem, will feature four local bands: The Dejas, Soul Rebel Project, Qwill, and Kevin William. The cost is $20 per person with a cash bar. All bands in this concert are performing free to support the Salem Y and its music program. A trio of drummers: James Murphy (Blue Man Group), Dave DiCenso (Josh Groban), and Rich Redmond (Jason Aldean)—will perform in Ames Hall on Tuesday, June 10 ,from 7 to 9:30 p.m. For more information, call 781-990-7061.
Guido’s Ear, a trio from New York City that specializes in late Renaissance and early Baroque music, will perform “The Birth of the Baroque” on Saturday at 8 p.m. at Salem Athenaeum, 337 Essex St. in Salem. In early 17th century Italy, instrumental music emerged from the shadows of vocal music and came into its own in works by composers from Monteverdi to Merula, Fontana, Castello, and others whose music we seldom hear. Pingree School will host a spring admission open house on Tuesday, May 20, on their South Hamilton campus at 537 Highland St. from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Parents and prospective students will be able to learn about the admission process, meet the head of school and current students, and tour the buildings, including the soon-to-open new arts and athletics facilities. The Danvers High School Class of 1969 45th reunion will be held at the Franco American Club, 44 Park St., Beverly, on Friday, June 6, from 6 p.m. to midnight. The cost, which includes dinner and drinks, is $50 per person and should be sent to Michael Hagan, 21 Roman Ave., Danvers, MA 01923 on or before May 20. The committee planning the reunion has commissioned a granite bench, to be placed in the courtyard memorial garden at the new high school, to honor deceased members of the class. Part of the ticket price will go toward the bench. Contributions toward the memorial may be sent, in a check with “memorial bench” in the memo, to Michael Hagan. In “Exploring Summer,” a creative writing class at Pingree School for youngsters in grades seven, eight and nine this summer, Ailsa Steinert of Manchester will lead students from free writing in journal entries to creating finished stories and poems. The class is open to students from any schools throughout the area. It is part of the No Kids Allowed summer program of courses designed for middle-schoolers who are looking for something interesting to do and have outgrown summer camp. Peabody Essex Museum and St. Michael’s Church are sponsoring a symposium, titled “Building a Handsome Church: St. Michael’s Marblehead, 1714,” on Saturday, June 7, from 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., at PEM, 161 Essex St., Salem. The symposium features a full day of presentations observing the 300th anniversary of the oldest Episcopal Church in New England still holding worship services in its original building.
