State to host harbor review meeting tonight

BEVERLY — The Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management will host a public information session tonight on its upcoming review of the city’s designated port area.

The meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. on the third floor of Beverly City Hall at 191 Cabot St.

The city asked Coastal Zone Management in April to review its DPA boundary after a judge denied the city’s plan to lease space on the waterfront for a Black Cow restaurant.

Beverly’s harbor is one of 11 DPAs established by the state that restrict development in order to preserve working waterfronts. The city is seeking to remove the designation to open up the area to developments like restaurants, apartments or condominiums, and recreation.

Tonight’s meeting is the start of the review process by Coastal Zone Management, the state agency that makes the final decisions regarding designated port areas. Mayor Mike Cahill said that process will take about a year.

Cahill said the city will begin looking at changing the city’s waterfront zoning rules next month.
