---- — SALEM — Police say the Beverly Bank on Lafayette Street was robbed, for the second time in three weeks, on Thursday afternoon — and possibly by the same suspect.

Police responded to 73 Lafayette St. after a receiving a panic alarm shortly after 5 p.m., according to the incident log and an interview with Sgt. Fred Ryan.

The suspect, described as a white man dressed in dark clothing and a baseball cap, walked in the bank, showed a teller a note demanding money and then fled on foot. It was unclear if he made off with any cash.

Ryan said it looked like both robberies were the work of the same man.

“Right now, we believe it’s the same guy,” he said.

The previous robbery at the bank occurred on April 25, when a man wearing makeup, a blonde wig and a red jacket showed a note to a teller and was last seen fleeing in the direction of Congress Street.

No weapon was shown in either of the incidents, and no injuries were reported.

Police searched the area of the bank after both robberies, but came up empty-handed. On Thursday, as detectives combed the area, they briefly stopped a motorist who appeared to match the suspect’s description on Derby Street, but determined he wasn’t involved.

The man was eventually let go but will be summonsed to court on a charge of operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license.

Police are continuing to investigate both robberies.
