Originality and tradition mark St. John's Prep commencement

DANVERS — The class of 2014 graduated from St. John’s Prep yesterday, with 273 seniors from 51 communities receiving diplomas.

The commencement exercises were the 104th in the history of the boys’ school, a Catholic, Xaverian Brothers-sponsored institution.

They were held on the St. John’s campus on Spring Street and were presided over by Headmaster Edward Hardiman.

The ceremonies featured class speaker Timothy Tully of Andover, who was nominated by his classmates and the school’s faculty, and valedictorian Alec McNiff of Beverly.

McNiff noted everything about St. John’s that was original and defied formulaic cliches, including its teachers.

“Our teachers do not simply teach the required material, give us a grade and go home,” McNiff said. “Our teachers tirelessly invest themselves in our education and growth as individuals. We cannot successfully achieve originality without the guidance and mentorship of these teachers.”

Faculty speaker David Hennessey, who teaches economics at St. John’s and is a member of its class of 1983, was chosen by the senior class.

Key awards that were bestowed yesterday include the Xaverian Award, which is presented to a senior who epitomizes the school’s values. The honor went to Matthew Censullo of Peabody.

Loyalty and Service Awards, which are given to seniors whose very presence makes St. John’s Prep an even better place, went to Danny Adames of Lawrence, Sawyer Billings of Marblehead, Dimosthenis Doulamis of Lowell, Tucker Plante of Gloucester, David Souza of Wilmington, Conor Sweeney of Reading and Timothy Tully of Andover.
