---- — PEABODY — State police say they arrested a man yesterday after he crashed his vehicle on Route 95 in Peabody, carjacked another vehicle and then crashed it too in Burlington.

No injuries were reported.

Arthur B. Choate, 23, of Gloucester, was arrested on charges of larceny of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a property damage accident, according to a press release. State police expect to charge Choate with multiple additional violations.

The incident began about 3:15 p.m., when state police at the barracks in Danvers responded to a report of a “hit-and-run crash followed by multiple additional crashes along Route 128 southbound in Peabody and ending in Burlington,” according to a second press release.

“The preliminary report is that the crashes are a result of one male suspect crashing his vehicle, then allegedly carjacking another vehicle and ultimately rolling that vehicle over,” wrote police. “The suspect was arrested trying to flee from the scene of the rollover crash.”

Police say Choate was operating a Chrysler Sebring when the original crash happened on Route 95 southbound, and that he then stole a Honda CRV also involved in that crash.

A total of seven vehicles were involved in that and subsequent crashes, police said.

Two lanes of Route 128 near the Burlington Mall were closed for about an hour as state police and personnel from the Burlington police and fire departments investigated the scene.

Choate was being held at the Danvers barracks last night.

The incident is under investigation. Police say alcohol didn’t appear to be a factor, and that there was no police pursuit during the incident.

No further information was available last night.
