'Drive-by' purse snatcher hits supermarket

SALEM — A woman at the Highland Avenue Market Basket was the victim of a "drive-by" purse snatching on Saturday afternoon.

Transferring food from her cart to her car, the shopper saw a man grab her purse from the carriage and run.

Police reviewed video of the incident and watched the man exit a dark Ford Focus, walk to the cart and grab the purse.

"It was apparent that the operator of the vehicle and the suspect are both involved," according to the log.

Police believe the thief was picked up by his accomplice later near Burger King. The video was too blurry to identify the vehicle. But the suspect, a white male, "was wearing blue jeans and a dark gray sweatshirt with white lettering" that reads "Sons of Anarchy."

The woman lost $40, a $100 purse and various credit cards.
